Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation of
Community- and Faith-Based Programs:
Second Edition
Designed for use by local implementing agencies, Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation of Community- and Faith-Based Programs demonstrates how using monitoring and evaluation can improve the impact of community interventions on HIV/AIDS. It is a step-by-step guide to making community-level HIV and AIDS services and activities more effective through community involvement in monitoring and evaluation (M&E).
The manual begins by explaining the process of monitoring and evaluation, including an overview of the distinctions between conventional and participatory M&E. Subsequent sections cover topics such as appraisal, planning and design, selecting indicators, baselines, monitoring, reporting, evaluation, and the use of other data sources. Each section addresses the various steps involved in conducting the activities. Chapters include explanations of different methods, examples of different types of tools, and discussions of how to plan for activities and who to include. The manual also includes tips and reminders about key considerations.
Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation of Community- and Faith-Based Programs is a valuable, practical tool for engaging communities in monitoring and evaluating their HIV and AIDS activities. The focus of the publication is on a learning approach to M&E that uses achievements and problems for better decision making and accountability.
This is a revised version of the PM&E manual which was originally posted on the CORE Initiative website in July 2005. This version incorporates feedback from field testing which took place in Malawi and Uganda.
