Overview of a Recent Workshop Sponsored by the CORE Initiative | (May 27, 2004) |
In May the CORE Initiative sponsored a 5-day leadership and advocacy workshop for HIV-positive women from the Asia region to support women's leadership and activism in HIV/AIDS issues through the Asia Pacific Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS (APN+). There is a lack of confident women leaders who can help facilitate the process of advocacy, equitable representation, and lobbying for People Living with HIV/AIDS in the Asia region. Because women are most vulnerable to AIDS-related stigma and discrimination, it is important that women participate in such trainings to acquire skills as advocates and facilitators to operate at a regional level and respond appropriately to regional advocacy and networking efforts. The workshop aimed to build the confidence and competence of key women activists to act as facilitators at a regional level. Women completed leadership and advocacy action plans for their own country situations to plan follow-up activities after the workshop.
