Project Description: American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is implementing a capacity building program for local Kenyan community-based organizations. Five innovative and effective Kenyan CBOs working to address the impact and spread of HIV/AIDS at the community level will receive support from this grant. Activities include home-based care training, peer education, food security, and nutritional support for communities affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition, seven Kenyan CBOs will participate in a series of south-to-south peer exchange workshops to identify best practices, share successful strategies, and work collectively to address challenges in grassroots communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

Project Name: Interfaith Exhibit at the International HIV/AIDS Conference in Bangkok

Project Description: An Interfaith Exhibit was organized at the International HIV/AIDS Conference in Bangkok with the support of the CORE Initiative, USAID, and the International AIDS Society. The booth was as a space for faith based organizations to display and distribute materials that are informative, focused on best practices, and helpful for the work of others. Preparations for the exhibit were guided by an interfaith advisory committee, coordinated by Catholic Relief Services, on behalf of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance. The Interfaith exhibit presented a forum to strengthen networking among faith-based organizations and provide a physical space to share materials and information about new programs within the parameters of shared values and mutual respect. It also served to communicate to other stakeholders the significant contribution already being made by FBOs and identify opportunities for partnerships and collaboration between faith and other organizations. More than 30 faith-based organizations exhibited at the space in July 2004.

Project Description: Christian Conference of Asia is a regional ecumenical organization accountable for 50 million constituencies of nearly 100 national churches and 15 national councils in 18 countries in Asia. With support from the CORE Initiative CCA conducted a participatory design workshop for Asian Interfaith Networking on AIDS on 17-18 July 2004 in Bangkok. Seventeen participants representing Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Muslim faith leaders from the region participated and agreed on a plan of action for further design and development of a regional interfaith network for more effective response within religious and faith communities to HIV/AIDS.

Project Description: Major activities include: 1) Capacity building for 8 new clubs; 2) Training 240 People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) on HIV/AIDS, home-based care, policy and regulations; 3) Exchange meetings to share experience and entertainment activities; 4) Training 60 key promoters of 20 clubs; 5) Training 30 mothers and wives of PLWHA on care and support; 6) IEC, counseling and health service referral for 700 PLWHA and their families; 7) Providing financial aids for 50 HIV women feeding a baby under 18 months old, and 50 orphans and HIV+ children; 8) Training 20 HIV+ women on embroidering; 9) Increasing their access to employment.

Project Name: Pre-planning meeting for International Muslim Leaders Consultation

Project Description: The Third International Muslim Leaders’ Consultation is planned for November 2005 in Cape Town, South Africa. In preparation for this consultation, the CORE Initiative provided funds to the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda to coordinate a planning meeting in Kampala, Uganda, in February 2005. Representatives of the Federation of Islamic Medical Association (FIMA) HIV/AIDS committee and organizers and participants from the first and second consultations attended two days of discussions. The meeting included discussions on the mission of the FIMA HIV/AIDS committee, action plans for the upcoming consultation in South Africa, and strategies to increase the impact and reach of the third consultation at the community level. The theme of the Third International Muslim Leaders’ Consultation will be “The Islamic Approach to HIV/AIDS and the Community Response.”

Project Description: This grant to Loma Linda University supported the Pan African Conference of Adventist Health Professionals held August 26-30, 2003. 261 African health professionals attended the workshop in Kenya to discuss the changing infrastructure of the Adventist health care system and the challenge of HIV/AIDS within that system.

Project Name: Documentation of LWR Best Practices Study Tour

Project Description: Lutheran World Relief is documenting two Best Practices Study Tours for Church communities from African community-based Lutheran and other churches in East and West Africa. The participants of the study tours were invited to submit concept papers for sub-grants to promote and expand on the best practices and lessons learned during the study tours. LWR provided 15 sub-grants to study tour participants to develop and realize their plans of action.

Project Name: Strengthening communications processes in AIC responses to HIV/AIDS in Kenya and Uganda

Project Description: The Organization of African Instituted Churches provides a forum for the African Independent Churches (AICs) to network and develop their capacity to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. OAIC has assisted in the mobilization of church leadership and in generating effective community-level initiatives that can offer HIV/AIDS prevention and care and support services at the grassroots level. Through support from the CORE Initiative, OAIC will increase the capacity of member churches and local CBOs to network and share examples of HIV/AIDS prevention programming that have been effective on the ground. Community-level leaders and mobilizers will be trained to bring together local experiences and share them among the multiple AICs in Kenya and Uganda, and church leaders will carry out advocacy and stigma reduction efforts within the churches.

Project Description: With support from the CORE Initiative, PACANet hosted a pre-ICASA Christian symposium aimed at consolidating a Christian response to HIV/AIDS in Africa. By harnessing the still fragmented Christian response across the continent, PACANet facilitated broad representation of African Christians at the ICASA conference with a view to voice a Christian presence at the ICASA Conference and articulate their comparative advantage in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

Project Name: Youth as agents of change addressing HIV and AIDS through South-South Youth Networks, Peer Education and Life Skills

Project Description: Through support from the CORE Initiative, the World Alliance of YMCAs and their partner, World YWCA, will implement a two-year peer education and life skills program in Sierra Leone and Angola targeting youth, parents, and religious leaders. The project adapts and implements a peer education curriculum that has been successfully implemented by YWCA and the YMCAs in other countries. South-to-south exchange and capacity building will support the peer education to help share lessons learned, shape best practices, and scale up the peer education program.
