Project Description: This organization will continue working with 72 families living with HIV/AIDS through in-door visits, support and referring targeted members to more appropriate health services. Acção Humana will establish effective links with institutions dedicated to voluntary testing and counseling (VCT), opportunistic infections treatment and ART, such as the Irish NGO GOAL, the Instituto Português de Medicina Preventiva, the Hospital Divina Providência and Hospital Esperança. The NGO’s beneficiary population is 80% women living with HIV/AIDS. Acção Humana will advocate the promotion of the rights of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWAs) through the Programa Nacional de Luta contra HIV/SIDA and mass media, mainly radio and newspapers. Besides, the NGO will support the Rede de Mulheres Vivendo com o HIV/SIDA, through the funds from CORE HIV/AIDS Initiative. Acção Humana will elaborate along with SNV (a Dutch NGO) a program for reinforcing the Rede de Mulheres Vivendo com o HIV/SIDA. The objective is to assist them to define mission and core values, and identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), setting up a strategic plan for the next two years.

Project Description: In mid-January 2004, the African Network of Religious Leaders who are Infected and/or Personally Affected by HIV/AIDS (ANARELA+) hosted a retreat in Limuru, Kenya to establish a Kenyan National Network (KENERELA+). 52 religious leaders living with or personally affected by HIV/AIDS from Kenya (42) and other African countries (10) participated in the retreat.

Project Description: American Jewish World Service (AJWS) is implementing a capacity building program for local Kenyan community-based organizations. Five innovative and effective Kenyan CBOs working to address the impact and spread of HIV/AIDS at the community level will receive support from this grant. Activities include home-based care training, peer education, food security, and nutritional support for communities affected by HIV/AIDS. In addition, seven Kenyan CBOs will participate in a series of south-to-south peer exchange workshops to identify best practices, share successful strategies, and work collectively to address challenges in grassroots communities affected by HIV/AIDS.

Project Description: In lieu of the cancellation of the Regional HIV/AIDS Conference in Kobe, the CORE Initiative provided support to the Asia Pacific Network of PLWHA (APN+) to bring together representatives from PLWHA organizations from the South East Asia Region to participate in the People Living With HIV/AIDS Asia Pacific Congress on January 11th and the Alternative Community Forum on January 12th-14th in Bangkok in preparation for the International HIV/AIDS Conference in July 2004. The grant funded the participation of 9 representatives from People Living with HIV/AIDS organizations from the South East Asia Region.

Project Name: China Nursing Initiative and Reducing young people’s vulnerability through VCCT services and HIV/AIDS education in India

Project Description: Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) is working to address HIV/AIDS issues in China and India. The China Nursing Leadership Initiative will strengthen the skills of China's nurses in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and counseling. The program will be implemented in Yunnan, Guanxi, Anhui, and Xinjiang Provinces in China. CMMB will collaborate with its implementing partners in China that include; University of Illinois at Chicago/College of Nursing, WHO/Western Pacific Region, Maryknoll China Service Project/Hong Kong, Hong Kong AIDS Foundation, Chinese Nurses Association/Beijing, and Ministry of Health/Nursing Division/Beijing.In India, The Voluntary Counseling and Testing Centers and HIV/AIDS Education for Indian Youth program aims to reduce young people's vulnerability to HIV/AIDS in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu states. CMMB, in collaboration with the Catholic Bishop's Conference in India (CBCI) Commission for Health, will implement the HIV/AIDS counseling and education for young people initiatives. These HIV/AIDS programs will strive to contribute to reduction in HIV prevalence and improve the quality of HIV/AIDS services to individuals, families and communities.

Project Name: Interfaith Exhibit at the International HIV/AIDS Conference in Bangkok

Project Description: An Interfaith Exhibit was organized at the International HIV/AIDS Conference in Bangkok with the support of the CORE Initiative, USAID, and the International AIDS Society. The booth was as a space for faith based organizations to display and distribute materials that are informative, focused on best practices, and helpful for the work of others. Preparations for the exhibit were guided by an interfaith advisory committee, coordinated by Catholic Relief Services, on behalf of the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance. The Interfaith exhibit presented a forum to strengthen networking among faith-based organizations and provide a physical space to share materials and information about new programs within the parameters of shared values and mutual respect. It also served to communicate to other stakeholders the significant contribution already being made by FBOs and identify opportunities for partnerships and collaboration between faith and other organizations. More than 30 faith-based organizations exhibited at the space in July 2004.

Project Description: The grant supports a 7-day HIV/AIDS seminar/ retreat to build the capacity of the religious leaders and workers. The first section of the seminar aims to build the capacity of the religious community to understand the impact of HIV/AIDS on their communities. It will examine epidemiological aspects of HIV/AIDS in Asia, best practice program responses across the continuum of prevention, care and support plus the barriers and challenges to the faith response. The second section of the workshop will focus on increasing understanding and ownership of the network as a means to help the religious communities in Asia deal with HIV/AIDS. The content will focus on the goal and purpose of the proposed network, confirmation of a three-year plan, roles and responsibilities, structure and governance of the network followed by resource needs and mobilization.

Project Description: Christian Conference of Asia is a regional ecumenical organization accountable for 50 million constituencies of nearly 100 national churches and 15 national councils in 18 countries in Asia. With support from the CORE Initiative CCA conducted a participatory design workshop for Asian Interfaith Networking on AIDS on 17-18 July 2004 in Bangkok. Seventeen participants representing Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, and Muslim faith leaders from the region participated and agreed on a plan of action for further design and development of a regional interfaith network for more effective response within religious and faith communities to HIV/AIDS.

The resulting case studies publication gives a snapshot of community-level experiences and lessons learned during their participation in the poster campaign.

The established partnership with Ministerio de Educação Ministéio da Juventude e Desportos, local Administration and other NGOs like CAJ (Centro de Aconselhamento de Jovens) and JIRO (Juventude Informada, Responsáv el Organizada) will support the project in the intervention area, plus it will ensure the necessary technical assistance.

Project Description: The CORE Initiative sponsored the participation of people living with HIV/AIDS, with a social focus on individuals from faith communities, for the 11th International Conference for People Living with HIV/AIDS, "The Dawn of New Positive Leadership" in Kampala, Uganda in October 2003. The main objectives of this conference were to: 1) have all participants grounded in the move to step up PLWHA leadership, the world over; 2) establish clear, accountable roles for people living with HIV/AIDS as policy and implementation partners to the national responses; 3) encourage adoption of positive aspects of the community response in Africa to other regions of the world; 4) equip participants with all aspects of how to access treatment in low resource settings; and 5) create an opening for young people living with HIV/AIDS in the PLWHA movement at all levels. The CORE Initiative funds provided scholarships for 9 conference participants representing religious leaders who are living positively.

Project Description: The International Community of Women Living With HIV/AIDS (ICW) has been awarded a grant to strengthen the capacity and voices of young women living with HIV/AIDS in Southern and East Africa. This objective is accomplished by building their leadership capacity and ensuring that they have the confidence, tools, and support to get their issues on the local, national, regional, and international agenda. The CORE Initiative supported an ICW Young Women's Dialogue meeting that contributed to the development of the International Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (ICW) Vision Paper 1. This grant also funded the translation of the Positive Women’s Survival Kit into Portuguese for use in Angola and Mozambique.

Project Description: The Third International Muslim Leaders’ Consultation is planned for November 2005 in Cape Town, South Africa. In preparation for this consultation, the CORE Initiative provided funds to the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda to coordinate a planning meeting in Kampala, Uganda, in February 2005. Representatives of the Federation of Islamic Medical Association (FIMA) HIV/AIDS committee and organizers and participants from the first and second consultations attended two days of discussions. The meeting included discussions on the mission of the FIMA HIV/AIDS committee, action plans for the upcoming consultation in South Africa, and strategies to increase the impact and reach of the third consultation at the community level. The theme of the Third International Muslim Leaders’ Consultation will be “The Islamic Approach to HIV/AIDS and the Community Response.”

Project Name: Capacity building program for HIV/AIDS clinical services in Rwanda

Project Description: Loma Linda University is partnering with Adventist Health International (AHI) to improve access to quality HIV/AIDS-related health services in Rwanda. With support from the CORE Initiative, affiliated health institutions are assisted in developing new HIV/AIDS quality assurance tools, standards, and policies to improve treatment for HIV/AIDS patients and safety for health service employees. Clinical staff will undergo training to improve their knowledge of treatment strategies and general HIV/AIDS patient care. All AHI-Rwanda institutions are establishing links between health services, the community, government organizations, local and international NGOs, PLHA support groups, and information resources to better coordinate and collaborate between the HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment activities in Rwanda.

Project Description: The Organization of African Instituted Churches provides a forum for the African Independent Churches (AICs) to network and develop their capacity to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. OAIC has assisted in the mobilization of church leadership and in generating effective community-level initiatives that can offer HIV/AIDS prevention and care and support services at the grassroots level. Through support from the CORE Initiative, OAIC will increase the capacity of member churches and local CBOs to network and share examples of HIV/AIDS prevention programming that have been effective on the ground. Community-level leaders and mobilizers will be trained to bring together local experiences and share them among the multiple AICs in Kenya and Uganda, and church leaders will carry out advocacy and stigma reduction efforts within the churches.

Project Name: Thai Thuam Kumar: Care and support for orphans and other vulnerable children affected by HIV/AIDS

Project Description: With support from the CORE Initiative, Ponleur Komar is able to expand its program and coverage, by reaching more than 3,500 children in 29 villages in Bakan district with care, support, prevention and mitigation services. The Thai Tuam Komar (Care for Children) project contributes to building the future of orphans and vulnerable children through three strategies. Thai Tuam Komar builds the capacity and commitment of the local community to provide locally appropriate care for OVC. Thai Tuam Komar also provides OVC with the opportunity to learn, play and participate in the village and school environment. Moreover, Ponleur Komar through its Thai Tuam Komar program, aims to provide support to older OVC to develop marketable skills so they can meet their own basic needs.

Project Description: The overall goal of the project supported by the CORE Initiative is to develop tools and model program approaches to support effective responses to HIV/AIDS among Muslim communities most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS and its impacts in the Western Cape of South Africa. The organization is based in Capetown and serves the Western Cape area with a specific focus on addressing the HIV/AIDS-related needs of Muslim communities. Positive Muslims has three program areas: care and support for people living with HIV and affected families; awareness raising and behavior change among Muslim populations vulnerable to HIV/AIDS; and research to better understand how the epidemic is affecting Muslim communities and how Islamic leadership and Muslim communities are responding. The deliverables of this grant are three publications on the Theology of Compassion: HIV, AIDS, and Islam booklet, a companion workshop manual, and a scholarly essay on the topic of HIV and Islam.

Project Description: The HIV/AIDS Church Mobilization Program grant project provides knowledge, resources and practical skills to individuals in the Church who are motivated by personal beliefs to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and provide compassionate care for those infected or affected by HIV/AIDS in the Chicualacuala district of Mozambique. The focus of the program will be on prevention of HIV/AIDS through education, and provision of care for vulnerable households. The Church is an established and recognized institution with extensive networks in the community, which makes it a very suitable foundation for this mobilization program.

Project Description: On 20 September 2003, over 14,000 gathered in Nairobi, Kenya for the 1st International Women's AIDS Run, to recognize women's efforts to prevent the spread of HIV, and celebrate their strength in providing care and support. The date was chosen to coincide with "ICASA 2003", the XIIIth International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa, which brought thousands of delegates and international media to Nairobi from the 21st to the 26th of September. The Women's AIDS Run was a joint effort by: women's and youth groups; local, national and international non-governmental and community-based organizations; sports organizations; governments of Kenya and other African countries; faith-based groups; schools and universities; AIDS service organizations and networks of people living with HIV/AIDS; aid and development agencies; donors and foundations; elite athletes; political leaders, entertainers and celebrities; and businesses and corporations.

Project Description: Major activities include: 1) Training on home care, anti-retrovirals (ARV) adherence monitoring, traditional therapies; 2) Establishing a network with voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) centers, HIV/AIDS treatment hospitals and tuberculosis treatment hospitals; 3) IEC activities, counseling, home care instruction, and referrals for 500 People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); 4) Pilot nursing care for PLWHA in 2 - 3 HIV/AIDS treatment hospitals; 5) Monitoring treatment compliance of PLWHA at home; 6) Using traditional medicine to cure some opportunistic infections and improve health status of PLWHA; 7) Integrating anti-discrimination into normal preaching speeches and rituals in the project pagoda; 8) Entertainment activities with the participation of community members and PLWHA to reduce stigma and discrimination; 9) Providing home visits for 50 AIDS patients for nutrition and spiritual support.

Project Description: This NGO will keep working on the building of capacities of eight religious leaders trained in the last phase. At least four seminars will be conducted to refresh the memories and consolidate the activities previously planned. Participants will then elaborate a work-plan to disseminate knowledge acquired in 15 religious communities. UBA along with Acção Humana will provide support, counseling and referring to health units with ART and treatment of opportunistic infections for PLWA.

Project Description: Through support from the CORE Initiative, the World Alliance of YMCAs and their partner, World YWCA, will implement a two-year peer education and life skills program in Sierra Leone and Angola targeting youth, parents, and religious leaders. The project adapts and implements a peer education curriculum that has been successfully implemented by YWCA and the YMCAs in other countries. South-to-south exchange and capacity building will support the peer education to help share lessons learned, shape best practices, and scale up the peer education program.

Project Description: The CORE Initiative co-sponsored this WCRP satellite session during the XIIIth International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA) which focused on issues of stigma and discrimination, and brought together senior African religious leaders, theologians, and representatives of networks of people living with HIV/AIDS in a round-table format to discuss ways of reducing stigma for those affected and infected by HIV/AIDS. The panel was moderated by Stephen Lewis and conducted in a format of questions and answers and discussion among the panelists.

Project Description: Major activities include: 1) Vocational training and job creation based on a need assessment; 2) Pre- and post-test counseling for 50 new and existing People Living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA); 3) Monthly exchange meetings for 100 PLWHA; 4) Setting up a group of families having PLWHA to share sympathy and experience; 6) Training 200 PLWHA and their caregivers on HIV/AIDS stages and issues, and home care; 7) Increase access of 500 PLWHA to different HIV/AIDS services of existing programs; 8) Support nutrition and treatment for 50 children, pay school fee for 30 children.

Project Name: Global Poster Competition against HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination

Project Description: Housed with the World Council of Churches, the Ecumenical Advocacy Alliance brings together 85 churches and church-related organizations worldwide for advocacy on HIV/AIDS and global trade. With Church World Service support, the EAA has launched a global poster competition as part of an ongoing campaign on HIV/AIDS. The primary goal of the project is to encourage a change in attitudes and behaviors relating to stigma and discrimination against people affected by HIV/AIDS. The global poster project is designed as a tool to educate, strengthen and support the churches and related organizations in overcoming HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in their local communities. The voices, stories, presence and involvement of people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS is essential and was encouraged at every level of the project. This project developed culturally diverse and appropriate graphic images (posters) about overcoming stigma and discrimination.
