The Communities Responding to the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, or CORE Initiative, was an international program supported by the United States Agency for International Development through a Leader with Associate Award.
The CORE Initiative's mission was to support an inspired, effective, and inclusive response to the causes and consequences of HIV/AIDS by strengthening the capacity of community and faith-based groups. This global program focused much of its work in Africa and Asia.
CARE led the CORE Initiative consortium, which included the International Center for Research on Women, the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health/Center for Communication Programs, and the World Council of Churches.
The Leader Award activities closed in 2007, while one Associate Awards remains open until 2008.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The CORE Initiative partnered with community and faith-based groups to advance multi-sectoral responses to the HIV/AIDS epidemic through grants, capacity building, and networking.
WHAT WE DID
The CORE Initiative supported community-level HIV/AIDS activities by working in three areas: grants, capacity building, and networking.
- GRANTS: Increasing access to resources for community- and faith-based organizations to ensure that they had the financial resources required to implement effective multi-sectoral HIV/AIDS programs
- CAPACITY BUILDING: Increasing the organizational and technical capacity of community- and faith-based organizations
- NETWORKING: Increasing and strengthening networking, advocacy, and exchange among project stakeholders and supporting community-level programming, advocacy, and partnerships
